Andy Humphries has come back from injury to take on the 3 races of the 401 Festival of Running on 26/27 the August 2017.
I met Ben Smith and his partner Kyle earlier this year at a couple of Children In Need events. Ben is the guy who ran an incredible 401 marathons in 401 days. I still can’t get my mind around running a marathon a day for well over a year. Of course running is only part of Ben’s life story. When you hear him speak he is truly inspiration but both he and Kyle are the nicest guys you could hope to meet. Ben has now set up a charitable foundation, The 401 foundation (www.the401foundation.co.uk). To raise funds for the foundation they set up the 401 festival of running in Portishead. This year was the inaugural event and included several running events over 2 days (inc 500m, 1 mile, 5k, 10k and half marathon) and a music festival on Saturday evening.
I have not been running much and certainly not raced for quite a while but was keen to support Ben and also to have a slight break from all the summer holiday excesses. I signed up for the 401 challenge which was 10k on the Saturday evening, 5k followed by half marathon on Sunday morning. My son, jack did the 5k. Jack had taken the preparation really seriously and had been carboloading (mainly full english breakfasts for weeks). To be fair I am not sure my preparation was much more healthy!
The weather both days was fantastic for the event but rather hot for running. The course were various routes in and around Portishead and quite hilly. I am not going to worry too much about the times or mention them here – the heat and hills meant most people were a long way off their PBs. Neveretheless it was a great event and well supported considering it was a first year. I am sure it will go from strength. Knowing Ben and Kyle I am very sure they will make this one of THE events in the region. I would certainly recommend it.
The medals were great and, the 5k, 10k and half marathon all linked together resulting in a fantastic bit of bling!!
Ed: Well done Andy! Great to see you back out there representing- I hope we can get more Cheddar runners involved next year!
