Andy W reports….
The Ox Marathon was my 2nd ‘official’ marathon this year and the 2nd this year run by White Star Running (need I say more about how much I value their races!)
It was a very misty morning and when the sun broke through it was hot, but there was a fresh feel in the air which meant the weather could go either way. With the amount of rain we had over the past week, one thing was for sure, it was going to be muddy and slippy! This was emphasised by a sudden, heavy, but shortish down poor at mile 15.
I did The Ox Marathon last year as my 1st official marathon and loved it hence why I chose it again this year, however, they had to change the route this year due to various reasons, so while I knew some of the course, some was new territory. The course was hillier and definitely a lot muddier than last year proving to be more of a challenge.
A running buddy of mine chose this race to be his first marathon and remembering how much I struggled last year, I decided to stay with him and hold him back for the first half so he didn’t go off too quick (lucky as we were both feeling it for the last 4 miles!). We finished in a very respectable 3:57 and being the gentleman I am, he finished in 13th and I finished in 14th; a very strong effort all round and another very enjoyable marathon.
