Thursday 22nd September saw the return of Weston AC’s Prom Series. It was a mildly chilly evening and the great thing about the first race is that when it starts it is still light! We gathered in the race hub, the Bay Cafe in the old Tropicana, amidst the smell of a well known muscular ache potion. The event had record-attendance so it was pretty busy at the start. The first prom race is a good indication of how well the summer track season has gone and there were nerves at the start; May seems like such a long time ago!
As usual, the race started just before the Tropicana, heading towards the Uphill end. Just before the golf club, the runners turned and headed towards the Knightstone Island end, passing the Aquarium, the Pier and the Winter Gardens. The runners turned again at Knightstone Causeway and headed back towards the Tropicana. The loop was then repeated, before finishing just after the Aquarium.
First home for Cheddar was Andy Rich who finished 17th in 29:15 (4th in category). Andy was followed by David Barrett (32:33 PB), Greg Pennington (32:48), Suzanne Davis (33:19 PB – 8th lady), Jenny McNamara (33:26 – 10th lady), Richard Mead (34:05 PB), Tom Pope (34:22 PB), Jeremy Newsome (34:30 PB), Rachel Flinders (34:42 PB), Joanna Rich (36:03 PB), Stuart McNamara (36:04 PB), Sarah Nield (38:28 PB), Simon Walsh (39:29 PB), Sorrel Langley-Hobbs (40:13 PB), Sara Stobart (41:08), Andrea Cox (42:24), Gill Constable (43:55), Alice Payne (46:25 PB), Maxine Bateman (46:45) and Phil Johnson (47:24).
So a massive twenty runners represented Cheddar in the race and one (injured) runner supported with the CRC tambourine of support. This is a huge change from a few years ago when only a few Cheddar vests were in attendance. This year we have four teams which is pretty cool.
The remaining races in the series are listed below
Thursday 20th October / Thursday 24th November / Thursday 22nd December / Thursday 19th January / Thursday 16th February / Thursday 23rd March / Thursday 20th April / Thursday 18th May
